5 Mistakes Every Teleworker Might Make

Whether to reduce travel, wait for a delivery, or wait for that repair person who will come sometime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., flexible work is becoming common and accepted.

When you are not yet used to working remotely, Debra Benton wants to warn us against a number of things in her book "The Virtual Executive".

1. In pajamas, hair a mess

This informal side is nice and not having to get ready to go out saves even more time. That said, it is advisable to dress as if you were going to work because it helps to get into a good work atmosphere and be more efficient.

2. Noise pollution

At home, you don't necessarily benefit from more tranquility. There's the neighbor trimming his hedge, his children having fun with their water guns, the postman passing by on his scooter. So find a room away from these noises. Plus, your colleagues won't believe you're having a good time on your patio when you're talking on the phone.

3. Believing you are the only one working

Even if you feel like you're working in isolation, colleagues at the office are also busy. They must be able to reach you when they need you. Let them know when you're going out for a quick errand or when you're temporarily unavailable.

4. Awkwardness during videoconferences

Videoconferencing software is a great way to communicate with colleagues. But don't forget that you are... being filmed. Even if you're drinking lemonade in that Duvel glass, your colleagues may interpret differently certain things they see around you.

5. The home office

Sitting in an armchair with your laptop on your lap is cozy, it's a change. However, be aware that a relaxed position can be very bad for your body, back, and wrists. Set up a real office, with a good office chair and all the appropriate furniture.
