6 unprofessional mistakes to avoid

Here are some surefire ways to lose your job. Some of these points may seem daily, commonplace and without consequences. Serious mistake! All are very good reasons for a superior to dismiss an employee. Remember that just because some people do it doesn't mean it's right to do it...

1. Spending too much time on the internet for personal reasons.
The Company is not the place for your chat discussions with your best friend, who has moved to the Canary Islands, nor for your personal research on your favorite playwright, Bertolt Brecht, on Google, nor for posting pictures of your last vacation in the Bahamas on Facebook! The Internet must remain a work tool and not a place for computer leisure.
Absolutely avoid surfing for hours, leaving your Facebook page open all day or playing online Scrabble or checkers! You are not paid for this and your boss might be very offended if they found out or noticed. Remain discreet and, above all, moderate. What constitutes the "fault" is not the action but its repetition.

2. Spending too much time on the phone for personal reasons.

The same applies to your phone calls, whether it's a landline or a mobile phone. You are not obliged to share your nice mother's advice with the whole office, nor Lucette's latest crepe recipe. Nobody is interested and rest assured that your credibility, reputation and professionalism will suffer.

3. Inviting someone to the Company premises.
A gentle reminder, by the way: no person outside the company is supposed to enter without a professional invitation. You must not bring family members or friends to your company, neither to show them your new designer lacquered office, nor to drink lemon tea from the machine in the corridor! You risk dismissal as there is a serious fault here regarding the security and confidentiality of certain data.

4 Sending or receiving emails in bad taste.
While it is undeniable that you have the right to have a virtual private life and send a greeting card to your aunt who lives in China, it remains that any exchange of somewhat sulphurous or even pornographic emails is perfectly prohibited as it could harm the employer's reputation, should there be any leaks.

5 Having questionable hygiene.

It is perhaps unnecessary to remind you that an employee is not absolutely entitled to stop washing or dressing correctly and cleanly. A receptionist who decides to give her total freedom to her hair system or an employee who suddenly finds it agreeable to come to work every day in pajamas and tracksuit would no longer be welcome in the Company.

6. Coming to work in a questionable state.
Arriving at the Company premises after using illegal substances (drugs, alcohol, etc.) can cost you your job without a doubt. Think about it before indulging in excess that is harmful to both your physical and professional life. It is better to be absent than present in a state that would definitively destroy your image. Your professionalism would be irremediably affected.
