6 Essential Questions to Ask Yourself Before Leaving Your Company for Another
In today's job market, having to choose between two positions is more of a luxury than a problem. However, it can become a real headache if you consider the consequences of each option.
So, don't hesitate to ask yourself the following six questions:
1. Is it really a better job, or just a desire to escape?
Many workers feel stuck in a job they find unfulfilling. Some seize the first opportunity to escape without thinking.
Big mistake... To make a sensible decision, you need to know what attracts you to this new opportunity. And not base yourself on what you hate about your current company.
Identify your potential new advantages before committing. It would be a shame to jump into an adventure you don't really like.
2. Do I really know what I'm getting into?
Receiving a job offer is flattering. And recruiters don't hesitate to embellish, or even oversell their company when they are determined to hire you. It is therefore natural to build an idyllic image of the situation awaiting you.
While the grass may seem greener elsewhere, you must still do your homework: check the company's financial health, stability, culture, management, etc. Start with the internet, ask your network, etc.
If questions arise during this research, don't hesitate to ask the recruiter to clarify the situation.
3. Will I be paid fairly?
Don't make the mistake of only comparing the offer received to your current salary. This is not always the best benchmark: you may be underpaid without knowing it.
Research the average salary for your position, according to your experience, your geographical region, etc.
4. In the end, what will my benefits be?
Salary counts. A lot. But you shouldn't focus on this element alone. A company can also be generous in other ways: pension plans, bonuses, 14-month salary, etc.
And other details such as extra days off or the possibility of working from home can also tip the scales. This won't fill your wallet but might make you a little happier...
5. In which company will I be able to grow the best?
You are the main actor in your professional career. But a good employer can play a key role. Being able to follow training, attend conferences or seminars are, for example, among the possibilities that will allow you to progress.
Ideally, you want to work for a company that is committed to helping you enrich your skills while progressing within it. Be strategic, think long-term before changing employers. Money is important, but your professional development should also be a priority.
6. Is fear driving my decision?
Clinging to the comfort of the status quo is equivalent to playing not to lose. So don't let fear hold you back from accepting a new position.
This decision involves a certain degree of risk-taking. But to succeed, sometimes you have to stop procrastinating, trust your intuition, and go for a new opportunity.
