All companies agree on the value of project-based operations within their teams. But unfortunately, the gap between manager expectations and the actual achievements of employees is often too large and reveals dysfunction.
Some pitfalls hinder the success of this organizational mode that companies seek to meet the demands of responsiveness and performance.
What are the main reasons for project failure?
Lack of buy-in from key players
Lack of training for people involved in the project, which can impact project completion and implementation.
Poor communication between the different people in the project team, resulting in poor or no information flow.
Risk of project team implosion under the stress generated by project-based operation.
How to avoid them?
Build a high-performing project team
Before launching a project, you must ensure that the project team is high-performing. To do this, it must be composed of "experts" whose goal is to achieve objectives predefined in advance by management, respecting a schedule and budget. It therefore requires a fairly high degree of trust between the different actors (leeway) and the responsibility of each person involved in the project, even if they are not the "Project Manager".
Have realistic and achievable projects
Management must therefore ensure throughout the project (which, let's emphasize, should not exceed 24 months), that the project is feasible, from a strategic and economic point of view, but above all, from a human point of view. Guaranteeing the realistic nature of a project will significantly reduce the stress generated for the manager.
Develop a "Project Culture"
Aware of the high failure rate of projects, companies are increasingly striving to create a true "Project Culture". Some even manage to prioritize them on par with objectives. The project is no longer seen as a separate event but rather as a way of working to guarantee a faster return on investment for the company.
Implement an action plan
The guarantee of a project's success depends on the implementation of a well-defined action plan, with actions and objectives clearly defined in time. This way, each actor will know exactly what their scope of action will be, the various tasks to be accomplished, and the potential difficulties to avoid.
In conclusion, implementing a project-based work method within your company can only be beneficial for ensuring its profitability, development, and performance, as well as that of its employees. However, the success of this operating mode depends above all on your involvement and that of the teams concerned.
