Before deleting your Facebook account...

Tired of endless Candy Crush invitations, overflowing selfies, or uninteresting content from algorithms? There are many reasons to want to close your Facebook account. However, if you are looking for a job, it's far from a good idea.

Less professional than LinkedIn, Facebook remains an interesting network to use in your job search. While only the paid version of LinkedIn offers the possibility of sending a message to someone outside your network, Facebook allows you to directly contact people. It is also full of specialized groups to find information about opportunities in your sector. For example, the group "Working in the cultural sector in Quebec" has 1,000 members, who use this space to post job offers and share advice.

Cleaning up your account

To make the most of Facebook's advantages while reducing nuisances, a little cleaning up of your profile is necessary to highlight the elements of interest. Rather than wanting to leave Facebook because of certain people who have the annoying habit of recounting every detail of their lives, why not simply block their posts, or even remove them from your friend list?

It is also possible to hide friends to make them invisible or to place them in the "Acquaintances" list. This way, they will appear less often on your newsfeed without risking alienating them. You can also choose to only receive posts from a person to avoid being overwhelmed by photos or inane comments.

Using it for monitoring

To customize the flow of information received, you can create lists of interest corresponding to the themes that are important to you. It's simple: you create your list by adding the people (former colleagues, recruiters, employees in your target sector, etc.), pages and groups you want and name it, for example, "Job" or "Career". You can choose to make it visible only to yourself or also to your friends. Then, the list appears in the Interests section in the left-hand column of the screen.

You can also modify the update and notification settings. Using this tool allows you to monitor, quickly access really interesting information and thus reconcile information and time saving.

Why not post an ad?

To make themselves known to potential employers, some Facebook users do not hesitate to use it as a marketing tool. Publishing your own ad costs only a minimum of one dollar per day and you can define a maximum amount to spend per day to advertise. A good photo, a catchy headline, a brief description, a link to your website or your LinkedIn profile, and you're done! Be specific to ensure that only people in your target audience click on the ad. Because each click on your ad is deducted from the daily amount defined at the start.
