Tunisia: Promoting the Digital Economy

On Thursday, September 3, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali met with Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi to review the progress of indicators related to information and communication technologies.
In this context, he recommended evaluating the performance of the mechanisms put in place to promote the digital economy and boost investment in high-value-added activities. He stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of the approved programs, particularly the development of new technological spaces and the conduct of a strategic study on the promotion of related services.
Separately, the Head of State looked into the situation of construction workers employed permanently in public services. He inquired about the measures taken in this area, which led to the recruitment of 6,500 workers in the civil service and provided 7,300 others with the guaranteed minimum agricultural wage (SMAG) and social coverage. The President also ordered the implementation of a 4-year strategy to regularize the situation of the remaining eligible workers, in accordance with current procedures.
Furthermore, the Head of State was briefed on preparations for the upcoming school and university year (2009-2010), giving instructions to ensure human and material resources and provide necessary services to ensure the start of the new school and university year under the best conditions.
