How to deliver a difficult message to your boss?

Do you want more responsibilities? Are you unhappy at work? Do you feel overwhelmed lately? If you want things to change, you'll have to talk to your boss. But how do you approach such a sensitive topic, and how do you get what you want? Here are some tips.

Choose the right time
Your manager is probably very busy and doesn't want employees dropping by for personal problems. Make an appointment or choose a quiet time. This way, you're sure they'll listen carefully.

Anticipate
If you know your boss, you know how they think and what counterarguments they might use. Don't be caught off guard; think about how you'll respond.

Be respectful
Unsatisfied with your salary, lack of responsibility, or inability to work from home? Never disrespect your boss. Point-blank telling them what you think is not the best tactic. Showing respect increases your chances of getting what you want.

Calm but assertive
Don't let yourself be walked over. If your manager uses incorrect arguments or tries to intimidate you, stay calm and refute their arguments professionally. Don't show emotions, even if furious or frustrated. Self-control makes you seem reliable and your message will be taken seriously.

Don't get bogged down in details
Ensure your message is clear, avoid unnecessary details. If you want to work from home, explain time lost in traffic, work you could do at home, or suitable days. Don't mention your late arrival last week due to an accident.

Highlight company benefits
Your boss prioritizes the company. Use arguments that highlight the benefits of your approach. Excessive work pressure leads to mistakes. More responsibilities can boost your morale and productivity.
