Living together is an art, and you need to be a confirmed artist to get by without too much damage within a company, which is basically a micro-society. If, in addition, you have a colleague with a "strong" character in your team, more commonly called a "Strong Personality", your days will not be easy. This disruption can affect your morale and therefore your work as well as that of others.
How to smooth things over? How to make this person understand that their behavior is disturbing or disruptive? Here are some tips from human resources specialists.
1. Talk:
First, make contact. Try to understand them. It may be a misunderstanding. You may have misinterpreted a gesture or a word. And it would be a shame to make things worse. Then, explain to them, in a cordial and calm manner, that their behavior is disturbing.
2. Know how to protect yourself:
The colleague in question may have two possible reactions to this conversation: In the best-case scenario, they may take it well and try to improve, if only for the good of the company. Otherwise, they could get defensive and react violently. Try to avoid them for a while to see if their behavior changes and thus prevent the situation from escalating or turning against you.
3. Check that it's nothing personal:
If their unpleasant attitude persists, if they continue to be aggressive, negative, grumpy, contemptuous or spread false rumors, conduct your own little investigation with your mutual colleagues to get a better understanding of this person and to check that there is nothing personal in their behavior. It is possible that your entourage also suffers from this attitude.
4. As a last resort, alert your superiors:
Above all, don't stay isolated. Alert your direct superior who will know what to do. Emphasize the points that could have negative repercussions on the work and on the team spirit of your colleagues. And don't hesitate to involve your colleagues affected by the colleague's bad behavior; this will give more weight to your intervention.
