Emotional Intelligence: A Workplace Asset

For a long time, traditional intelligence, known as "IQ", was considered the ultimate key to success in professional life. However, in the early 1990s, this was strongly questioned by the emergence of a new concept: "Emotional Intelligence".

Emotional Intelligence is defined as the way of understanding oneself and others, maintaining relationships with people and adapting to one's environment in order to optimally meet the demands of one's environment.
Unlike IQ, which is limited to the transfer of knowledge, Emotional Intelligence develops and improves when the individual becomes aware of its importance in their professional and personal life.

Emotional Intelligence: Personal Work

Numerous studies have shown that the nature of the emotions people share in their workplace has a major impact on organizational productivity. Despite the efforts made by HR to raise awareness among their employees about the importance of the human, emotional and relational dimension within a company; developing Emotional Quotient is and remains a matter of "Self", an individual will.

The different levers of Emotional Intelligence

The first lever is Self-Awareness. It consists of knowing our emotions, self-confidence, honest identification of our strengths and weaknesses, and above all, awareness of our negative thoughts that slow us down in our daily actions.

The second lever is Social Awareness. It appeals to the notion of empathy. This implies the desire to help others improve, to be influential, to communicate and manage conflicts, to promote teamwork and collaborate with the objective of satisfying everyone.

Finally, comes the notion of Self-Management. This is a fundamental axis that promotes good management of our mood and that of others; it is constant self-work that calls for better tolerance and management in the face of daily problems. Self-management creates personal values. It allows one to direct one's energy positively and to develop several qualities in the professional environment such as reliability, integrity, adaptability, motivation and initiative.

Self-awareness, awareness of others, these are the essential components for acquiring and developing our Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is a real motivator; it allows us to redirect our emotions towards the achievement of our goals. And while it is innate in some, it requires a process of personal work in others!
