In an interview, how can I handle tricky questions?

Don't let tough questions destabilize you. Stay alert.

Prepare to be destabilized. "Aren't you too young for this job?" This is the kind of question recruiters often use during an interview to assess you. These difficult questions can trap you if you're not prepared. They cover everything from your professional choices to your personality... Your weapon? Don't let them fluster you.

Avoid stereotypical answers. Some intentionally incisive approaches are designed to push you to your limits. The best defense is to prepare your answers, while remaining sincere and spontaneous. Avoid stereotypical answers learned by heart, or you risk annoying the interviewer. Also, be ready for completely innocuous questions, seemingly unrelated to the recruitment process; they disrupt the flow of dialogue and test your ability to recover.

You can remain silent.
The information they request only serves one purpose: to allow the recruiter to assess your suitability for the job. So, refrain from answering questions you deem inappropriate, and avoid intrusions into your private life. The challenge is setting boundaries without it harming you, because questions about your lifestyle or values quickly become very personal. However, refusing to answer provocative or indiscreet questions often meets the recruiters' expectations...
