Tunisia is working to empower women, to facilitate their integration into the economic life and their adaptation to the demands of the new economy by encouraging them to pursue careers in science, such as computer science, mathematics, engineering, and especially technology.
Indeed, integrating women into the information society is a top development priority in Tunisia. Furthermore, Tunisian women have always demonstrated their ability to excel in all fields and play a key role in facilitating family access to ICTs.
In this regard, and as part of the ministry's contribution to the celebration of Tunisian Women's Day, Mr. Mohamed Naceur Ammar, Minister of Communications Technologies, recently chaired a Ramadan evening focused on the efficient contribution of women to family adoption of ICTs.
This meeting provided an opportunity to showcase two success stories of women in the communications technology sector and honor numerous graduating students from Sup'Com and the Higher Institute of Technological Studies of Tunis.
Moreover, the minister highlighted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's development approach, considering women as efficient partners in all aspects of life, which has allowed them to occupy a prominent place both nationally and internationally.
Over the years, Tunisian women have distinguished themselves in all sectors, including communications technology, knowing that they now play a leading role in facilitating family adoption of ICTs and adapting them to the needs of young people, in addition to their contribution to development. In this regard, Mr. Ammar emphasized that the proliferation of companies specializing in ICTs in Tunisia and the diversification of employment opportunities in the sector have enabled Tunisian women to acquire high technological skills and master new high-value-added professions.
As a reminder, the presence of Tunisian women in key sectors such as new technologies is increasingly noticeable. The current results of a study conducted by the Ministry of Communications Technologies show that 78% of Tunisian women own a mobile phone compared to 82% for men; 48% of them use a computer at home or at work. Better yet: 75% of women use their computer for personal use compared to 48% for professional use.
This study tends to prove, with regard to the use of the internet tool, that the integration of communications technologies in both educational and professional environments has largely contributed to gender equality. The proof, on the web side, 34% of these women browse the web several times a day. As for having an email account, it is around 23%.
