Morocco allows tourism activity to continue growing year after year. A land of contrasts, a crossroads of civilizations and cultures, the gateway to Africa from Europe, a land of escape, adventure, and unparalleled hospitality in the world, with an available human resource, Morocco has geographical and natural assets of great importance that must be exploited judiciously and rationally in order to develop the tourism sector, vital for the progress of our country and a creator of jobs.
Morocco on the road to e-tourism?
Since always, tourism in Morocco has been essentially based on private tours that were either prepared by local travel agencies or most often carried out individually by travelers.
Since the advent of the Internet, tourism in general has taken on virtual dimensions and unfortunately our country is not yet quite up to scratch!
Indeed, the Internet has greatly contributed to the development of tourism in Morocco through "cheap" package tours from European countries. But locally speaking, today, we still cannot speak of e-tourism because Morocco is not yet at the level of interactive and attractive websites where you can organize, book and pay for your tourist trip in a few clicks! Moroccan websites are still static and not yet ready for virtual tourism!
Changes with the 2010 vision…
The importance of tourism in Morocco implies efforts to be made, not only to develop an e-tourism capable of competing with other countries, but also and above all, to achieve the objectives set (10 million tourists by 2010). On this point, private tourism operators are unanimous, the development of an interactive e-tourism is essential to the evolution of this key sector of the national economy. The Royal Air Maroc website is one of the few sites that offers online booking but still not payment because the latter is still not part of the customs of Moroccans… but it will not be long in coming!
A lack of qualifications…
A lack of qualified personnel in the tourism sector is too often felt, and professionals in the hotel industry complain about it. To address this shortcoming, the Office of Vocational Training and Labor Promotion has launched a training project to quickly fill this skills gap.
Since September 2006, the Office of Vocational Training and Labor Promotion (OFPPT) has set itself the objective of training 72,000 managers and employees needed for the tourism sector for the 2010 horizon project. To meet this challenge, the Office has created 8 establishments dedicated to tourism professions, including a skills development center (CDC). These establishments require a total investment of 335 million DH and are located in particular in regions with high tourist value: Al Hoceima, El Jadida, Essaouira, Marrakech and Agadir.
The overall strategy of the "2010 vision" is to position Morocco among the top 20 tourist destinations worldwide. Namely, to increase the flow of tourist arrivals to 10 million people and thus create nearly 600,000 jobs…
