President of the Tunis Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mounir Mouakhar, is confident in the future of the Tunisian economy. He relies heavily on young people to ensure economic recovery. And will organize Tunis-Medindustrie, the first international exhibition of Tunisian industrial partnerships, from June 15 to 17, 2011.
TUNISIA. econostrum.info: How is the Tunisian economy doing four months after the revolution?
Mounir Mouakhar: The economic situation is rather good. Tunisia should achieve growth between 0 and 1% in 2011. This is an exceptional figure considering the disruptions our country experienced for several weeks.
This growth does not allow for the creation of many jobs, yet this is the priority, the main concern of the provisional government and everyone, especially for young graduates.
Job creation is linked to economic growth, which is linked to investments and therefore to the country's political and security situation. We are on the right track.
econostrum.info: What did this January 14 revolution bring you?
Mounir Mouakhar: The advantage of our revolution is considerable in terms of freedoms; it allows us to now see the future with great optimism. Tunisia has formidable tools, including an educated youth that has been able to lead its own revolution and which will be able to ensure economic recovery.
The Tunisia site remains attractive
econostrum.info: This revolution also frees the unemployed and employees in their demands. Some even speak of overcharging?
Mounir Mouakhar: Tunisian society is facing major transformations. The more time passes, the more things will return to normal. Tunisians have a sense of responsibility.
This Mediterranean is becoming an area of peace because we have been able to export our revolution. We must provide solutions to all these expectations and, among other things, of course employment, but also better living conditions and limit regional imbalance. We must provide quick solutions to Tunisians.
The Tunisia site remains very attractive in terms of investment. We want to transform it from a low-cost workforce platform to a site sought after for its assets: human capital, geographical proximity, the association agreement with the European Union, agreements with friendly countries...
Tunisia has enough favorable conditions without foreign investors needing to focus solely on the cost of labor.
Today, our country aspires to innovative projects, with high added value, and to cooperation with other countries.
Tunis-Medindustrie, the first exhibition since the revolution
econostrum.info: Will the organization of the first edition of Tunis-Medindustrie (June 15-17, 2011) contribute to this momentum?
Mounir Mouakhar: With Tunis-Medindustrie, an international exhibition of industrial partnership and innovation, our objective is to create synergies between the different industrial components. This first post-revolution event will bring together Tunisian, French, Spanish, and Italian companies.
Our slogan is "investing in democracy and progressing together" (editor's note). Tunis-Medindustrie is organized by the Tunis CCI in collaboration with the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (API) and the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the Mediterranean (Ascame).
This event will host more than 150 Tunisian and foreign exhibitors specializing in mechanical industry, electrical and electronic industry, technical plastics, rubber and packaging, measurement and control, innovation, maintenance, vocational training, engineering and programming, and logistics.
