The Basics of Email Job Applications

rekrute.com_The Basics of Email Job Applications.

Too much information, poor presentation, and a neglected application. These are the most frequent criticisms recruiters have for applications received by email. Applying by email is a good idea, but keep in mind that you need to dedicate time to it for it to be effective. We have therefore drawn up a list of elements not to rush.
A professional email address

Use your own email address to receive the recruiter's reply directly. Caution: make sure this address is professional. Avoid, for example, superman@yahoo.fr. Ideally, it's an email address that uses your name, and which will allow the recruiter to more easily find your application in their emails. Don't forget to check your email every day.

1. A clear subject line
The word 'application', alone, in the subject line of an email is not very precise and shows little creativity. Above all, mention the position you are applying for (and the reference if there is one).

2. A carefully written cover letter

An email is often more informal than a letter, but for your application, it is necessary to always use the same courtesy as in a letter. The digital cover letter must be as carefully written as a classic letter. Email applications often contain errors. This is why we advise you to carefully reread your email before sending it to avoid typos. Avoid abbreviations and use business language. Feel free to insert the content of your cover letter directly into the body of your email.

3. Useful attachments
Your attachments must not exceed 2MB. Attach your CV and only the documents that are really necessary for your application. If the company wants more information, they can contact you later to obtain it. Choose a descriptive name, followed by your name.
You can convert your files to PDF format to ensure that your document will display as you wish. Avoid file formats such as HTML, BMP, EPS or ZIP which are not readable by everyone. Also do not use .exe files that open automatically.

4. Recipient
Make sure you send your application to the right person, to prevent your email from getting lost if it is not forwarded to the right recruiter. Only use the email address found in the job posting.
For unsolicited applications, you can find the email address of the recruitment manager on the company's website. It is always preferable to send your application in a targeted way, to a specific person, rather than to a general address such as "info@xx.fr" or "contact@xx.fr". You can call the company to get the email address of the HR manager.
Once your application has been sent, be aware that recruiters do not systematically send acknowledgements of receipt, and it is possible that you may not even get a reply. If you haven't heard back after several weeks, do not hesitate to call the company directly to find out about the status of your application in the recruitment process.

A recruiter will take an average of 2 to 4 minutes to review each application. It must therefore be both clear and striking.
