Japanese Mitsui to establish itself in Ivory Coast

Mitsui & Co. trading house plans to open a representative office in Abidjan before the end of the year. The Japanese group plans to position itself on several infrastructure projects.
The Japanese company Mitsui & Co. plans to establish itself in Abidjan, the Ivorian economic capital, before the end of the year. Hironobu Ishikawa, the managing director of the Japanese trading house in charge of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, was received this Tuesday, August 4 by Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan to discuss projects in the fields of infrastructure, agriculture, energy and transport in Ivory Coast.
Negotiations
Mitsui & Co., which already has offices in Accra, Casablanca, Nairobi, Maputo and Johannesburg, made an offer to the Ivorian authorities last March for the construction of two thermal power plants with an individual capacity of 1,000 megawatts in the San Pedro region. According to Hironobu Ishikawa, Mitsui Co & LTD hopes to enter into exclusive negotiations on these projects with the Ivorian authorities. "We are also interested in port operations and the Port of San Pedro interests us. We would negotiate all these points with the government. We are ready to go beyond 3 billion dollars of investment over the next ten years," he told Jeune Afrique.
The Japanese conglomerate Mitsui Group, to which Mitsui Co. is linked, is already present in the Ivorian offshore sector via its subsidiary Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Co., Ltd (MODEC) active in the development of the Baobab oil and gas field. The Japanese are also interested in the extension of the West African gas pipeline to Abidjan.
