Growth prospects less unfavorable than expected for domestic tourism in 2012! This is revealed in a note recently published by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) on the economic trend in this sector during the month of April. This analysis is due to the positive evolution of international tourism, which is starting to recover and from which the Kingdom is relatively benefiting.
As a projection, the growth prospects for tourism activity in Morocco, for the first half of 2012, are less hampered than in the fourth quarter of 2011, in view of the overall change in global tourism.
Thus, a respective increase of 1.5% and 0.4%, in quarterly variation, of the added value in the accommodation and catering trades, excluding seasonal effects, is expected for the first and second quarters of 2012.
Increase in arrivals of Moroccans residing abroad
It should be recalled that the sector's added value decreased in the fourth quarter of 2011, by 1.6% in quarterly variation.
The same is true for other indicators in the sector.
The nights spent in classified tourist accommodation establishments fell by 3.9%, year-on-year, suffering from a 4.6% drop in nights spent by non-residents and a 1.9% drop in nights spent by residents.
The arrivals of foreign tourists also fell (-2.7%), suffering from the decrease in arrivals from Europe, linked to the decline in European economic activity observed during the same period. However, the increase in arrivals of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), i.e. +11.8%, helped to mitigate this fall in overall arrivals, which strengthened by 3.7%.
The "Green Key" label awarded to 70 establishments
The "Green Key" label, which annually rewards tourist establishments committed to respecting the environment, has just been awarded to 70 tourist accommodations: 29 hotels, 25 guesthouses and 16 establishments of all types (inns, gîtes...), spread across all regions of Morocco. This year's particularity is the adhesion of high-standing and internationally renowned establishments, concerned about their environmental image. The awarding of the "Green Key" is based on audit reports drawn up by independent experts. The decision to grant it is taken within the framework of a national jury. It should be noted that the "Green Key" label is a program supported by the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment.
