Nearly one in four recruiters say job hopping is a major obstacle to hiring; for 31%, it's prolonged unemployment of more than a year that's a turn-off, and for 28%, it's patchy CVs that represent the biggest hurdle. In short, job stability increases your chances. Easy to say...
That's what Bullhorn, a provider of online recruitment software, tells us after surveying 1,500 American recruiters about the main reasons why candidates don't get jobs.
Job Hopping Is Viewed Negatively
Job hopping refers to professional instability, regular job changes—every year or more. The problem is that the younger generation seems to favor this new career model: young people are more likely to change jobs more often than their elders. Changing jobs once or twice seems insignificant, but systematically changing jobs may suggest that you have commitment issues or that you jump from one employer to another just to climb the corporate ladder faster or even...to earn more money faster. In other words, your personal goals outweigh your interest in the company. This does not make you a sure bet for the employer, who may not see your commitment as a good investment.
Long-Term Unemployment: A Taboo?
According to 36% of respondents, a candidate will raise suspicions as soon as they exceed 6 months to 1 year of unemployment. After that, good luck finding a job: unemployment becomes a deal breaker because the candidate's skills no longer seem to be in demand (for 31% of the recruiters surveyed). Moreover, since technologies and work tools evolve so quickly, one can quickly become obsolete (for 26% of recruiters)!
Avoiding Stigmatization
There's nothing worse when you're looking for a job than not knowing if you've been selected. An informed candidate increases their chances of being hired. Bullhorn advises unemployed candidates not to remain inactive, but to accept part-time work, training, etc.—in short, to use their free time for something useful. And they advise companies to forget their prejudices about unemployment and to put an end to systematic stigmatization.
