9 Questions to Ask Before Accepting a Project

Project-based work is common in companies. But it should be accepted knowingly. Because it can strongly impact your career. Questions to ask, by Thierry Picq, professor at EM Lyon.

1/ Will the time devoted to the project replace all or part of the time dedicated to my usual operational activities?

This raises the question of your ability to absorb an additional workload or to organize the delegation of some of your ordinary activities.

2/ What resources are available to me for preparation?

(individual support, training, mentoring by a senior project manager, specific preparation period, transition period, etc.)

3/ What compensation/recognition can I expect if the project is successful?

4/ What happens to me if the project fails?

5/ How is my participation in the project integrated into my evaluation?

6/ What can I expect from my project participation in terms of career advancement?

7/ And who evaluates me?

8/ How will the skills I have acquired during the project be taken into account and valued?

What are the next steps for me after the project?

9/ Who can I contact if things go wrong during the project (conflicts, difficulties contributing, time management problems, priority issues, etc.)?
