Keys to Motivation

Each human being has within them unused potential, limited only by self-imposed, unconscious boundaries. To fully exploit their potential and overcome these limits, they need energy: the pleasure of doing and the recognition it brings.
In fact, we shouldn’t talk about motivation (which is fundamentally internal to the individual) but rather involvement. Actions demonstrate our motivation and therefore our involvement. Is it possible to be involved, take initiative, and be autonomous if what we do is unpleasant and stressful?
Besides compensation, pleasure (working conditions, atmosphere, interest, serenity, etc.) will allow for perseverance. Pleasure also means doing work that is part of a project and whose meaning we understand. Besides pleasure, signs of recognition are necessary for our involvement: congratulations, interest, encouragement... If we don’t receive positive signs of recognition, we will unconsciously provoke negative ones by making mistakes... indifference being the worst thing for an individual.
We are motivated by three elements: money, pleasure, and recognition.
Questions for Happiness and Involvement
Below are 12 points, according to Marcus Buckingham, expressed as questions that one should answer “yes” to in order to be happy and involved:
1. Am I aware of what is expected of me in my activity?
2. Do I have the necessary resources for my work to be done correctly?
3. Do I have the opportunity to use my skills every day?
4. Did I receive any recognition for my work this past week?
5. Do I have someone at work who supports my progress?
6. Are my superiors or colleagues interested in me as an individual?
7. Does my opinion matter?
8. Does my company’s vision give meaning to what I do?
9. Are my colleagues motivated to do “good work”?
10. Do I have a true friend at work?
11. Has anyone spoken about my progress in the last 6 months?
12. Has the past year allowed me to learn and progress?
Identification as a Source of Motivation
Motivation = Commitment + Identification
How to achieve this identification? Everyone within the company must become their own business leader with their own responsibilities.
The old “manager-managed” system is failing. A good company image carries everyone along: everyone takes care of their work for their own pleasure.
