Factors Motivating Moroccans at Work
- Career advancement and skills development are central concerns for Moroccans
- Moroccans are concerned about their future: a search for job security and increasing social benefits
- Expectations in 4 years closer to European work motivation factors
Two international leaders are again partnering this year with the leading employment portal in each country to conduct a large-scale international survey. For the 4th consecutive time, BCG and The Network are joining ReKrute for the Global Talent Survey, the world's largest survey on international mobility and worker behavior. This second part of the report is a unique opportunity for Moroccan companies because it describes the factors that motivate Moroccans at work and their current needs.
This survey covered more than 360,000 people in 198 countries, including 6,721 Moroccans.
Moroccans' work priorities are mainly linked to job assignments
What motivates Moroccans at work, and helps them become more efficient, is the development of their skills. This is an important issue for Moroccan workers because they want to expand their range of opportunities. Then come the career opportunities offered by the position. In general, employees in Morocco are mainly concerned with developing a successful career plan and achieving their professional goals. They therefore prioritize these aspects that directly relate to the position, over other factors that depend on the company culture, its employer image or its financial health.
Indeed, motivational factors depending on company culture are secondary for Moroccans: job security, good relationships with management/colleagues,...etc. They are more concerned with the position itself and the tasks it entails than with the company and its environment.
Motivational factors in Morocco vs. internationally
Internationally, and unlike in Morocco, priority is given to company culture: employees are first interested in relationships with colleagues, work/life balance and relationships with management. Job assignments and employer image come second. Remuneration and financial benefits are last, both in Morocco and internationally: the salary package is not a priority for young executives today. For Moroccans, their primary motivation is not pecuniary: remuneration is not in the Top 10. Social benefits are included in this year's ranking (10th place), while they are in 23rd place worldwide. Moroccans attach great importance to social coverage and even make it a selection criterion. Added to this is job security, in 3rd place in the ranking. These two points allow us to make an observation: Moroccans today are concerned about their future and want to work in a sustainable company that offers them a stable and favorable situation. In 2015, following the ReKrute survey 'Motivational factors for Moroccans', social benefits were the main motivational factor for Moroccans. There has been a real evolution of mentalities in 3 years, given that this factor has ceded its first place to skills development. But social coverage is no less important. It should also be noted that remuneration was the 8th motivational factor in 2014 (Global Talent Survey 2014), and today it is not even part of the Top 10. Internationally, remuneration occupies the 8th place, but social benefits are in 23rd position: employees worldwide are not really concerned about the social benefits offered by the company.
Another noteworthy fact is that work/life balance is not among the top 10 motivational factors for Moroccans, while it is the 2nd motivational factor internationally. Moroccan employees are real workers who put their career and skills development first, sometimes at the expense of a work/life balance.
It is clear that the motivations of Moroccans are increasingly approaching the European model. They tend to satisfy needs that are closer to the top of Maslow's pyramid.
