Gestures to Avoid During a Job Interview

Beyond words, recruiters pay attention to candidates' body language. Many HR professionals have psychology backgrounds, giving them an advantage. However, we can use research to our benefit and level the playing field. Here are seven gestures to avoid to feel comfortable and relax the atmosphere.

1. Crossing your legs: To project confidence, avoid crossing your legs. Sit relaxed but not slumped, feet flat on the floor, leaning slightly forward to show interest. Keep your legs still; fidgeting can annoy the interviewer and shorten the meeting.

2. Crossing your arms and excessive hand gestures: Crossing your arms is unfriendly and defensive. Don't wave your hands around excessively. Rest your hands on your lap, using them occasionally to emphasize points.

3. Taking up too much space at the desk: If seated at a desk, don't sprawl or rest your elbows on it (just like your mom always said at the dinner table!). Don't leave your phone, keys, etc., on the desk; this isn't your home.

4. Hands in pockets:
Stand tall and face your interviewer. Avoid putting your hands in your pockets; it shows disrespect and carelessness.

5. Avoiding or staring: Avoid staring or constantly avoiding eye contact. Find a balance, glancing around occasionally before returning your gaze. Maintain a friendly, determined expression.

6. Avoid nervous habits: Eliminate bad habits: cracking knuckles, playing with your hair, nail-biting, nose-picking, etc. These show boredom or discomfort. If you struggle to stop, try a fidget item like a necklace or scarf for comfort.

7. Appropriate attire: As discussed in previous articles, appropriate clothing is crucial. It helps your presentation, and more importantly, helps *you* feel confident.
