Top Employees Are Always a Little... Eccentric

What are the qualities of the best employees? We think of reliability, proactivity, teamwork, and all the qualities systematically listed in job postings. But for Jeff Haden, in BNET, these invaluable qualities are quite different. He believes that the qualities we never notice are precisely those that make a very big difference in performance.

Here are these 9 qualities:

1. They are unconventional. The best employees are often a little eccentric, sometimes a little irreverent, happy to be different. These personalities bring humor to the workplace, overturn clichés, shake up teams, and often have original ideas.

2. But they know when to stop and "pull their weight." When the company is experiencing difficulties, they stop their antics and blend into the team to give their best.

3. They ignore job descriptions. The smaller a company, the more it needs employees who are able to take initiative, adapt to priorities, and do what is necessary. The best employees know how to forget the boundaries of their job to solve problems without being asked.

4. They are eager to prove others wrong. Their motivation often stems from dissatisfaction, and they want to prove those who doubt their worth wrong. It is this desire that pushes them to surpass themselves.

5. They praise others publicly. Nothing can boost morale better than receiving praise from a colleague, especially if it's your manager. The best employees recognize the value of others' contributions and don't hesitate to compliment them.

6. They know how to complain privately. It is appreciated that an employee raises problems, but some difficulties must be resolved privately. The best employees more often detect problems because they take a lot of initiative. But they have the good taste to discuss it with you discreetly.

7. They ask questions for others. Some employees hesitate to speak up during meetings, for example. The best employees understand the problems and needs of others and do not hesitate to speak on their behalf when they deem it necessary.

8. They start their work on time. This does not mean that they are champions of punctuality, but rather that they know how to avoid multiplying coffee breaks, morning gossip, or writing personal emails.

9. They are tinkerers. Good employees follow procedures. The best employees go further and find ways to improve these procedures, not because it is what is expected of them, but because they cannot help themselves.
