Why Are Moms More Stressed Than Dads?

Moms are, on average, busy with multiple tasks at the same time for 48 hours a week. This phenomenon affects men much less...

According to scientists at Michigan State University in the United States, men's multitasking at home mainly revolves around work. Women, on the other hand, have to coordinate more household chores in addition to childcare. The fact that this more often generates conflict and a sense of guilt for women may explain the stress.

More Responsibilities

For moms, household chores account for 53% of multitasking on average. For men, it's 42%. 36% of multitasking for women is related to childcare, compared to 28% for men.

"If we analyze multitasking, we observe that women always take on more responsibilities in the household than men," explains researcher Barbara Schneider, Professor of Sociology at Michigan State University. Mothers have to concentrate on several tasks at once for about 40% of their waking hours.
