According to the latest statistics from the High Commission for Planning (HCP), the unemployment rate jumped 0.5 points in the third quarter of 2014 to reach 9.6% compared to 9.1% a year earlier. It rose from 14% to 14.5% in urban areas and from 3.7% to 4.1% in rural areas.
The number of unemployed people increased by 6% nationally, rising from 1,076,000 in the third quarter of 2013 to 1,140,000 in the same quarter of 2014. The number of unemployed thus increased by 64,000 people (40,000 in urban areas and 24,000 in rural areas).
The largest increases were observed in urban areas among young people aged 15 to 24 (+2.1 points) and adults aged 25 to 34 (+1.2 points). In rural areas, young people aged 15 to 24 were the most affected (+2 points). Young people and graduates are among the most affected categories. On this subject, the HCP notes that the unemployment rate reached 20% among those with a higher education degree, with a rate of 24.6% for university graduates. Graduates of professional qualifications are also among the most affected, with a rate of around 22%. In contrast, people without diplomas fare better. The unemployment rate for this category was 4.6%.
The underemployment rate rose from 9.4% to 10.6% nationally, from 8.6% to 9.6% in urban areas, and from 10.3% to 11.6% in rural areas. Regarding job creation, the HCP notes that Morocco created 133,000 jobs in the secondary and tertiary sectors and lost 75,000 jobs in "agriculture, forestry, and fishing," resulting in a net job creation of 58,000 jobs (36,000 in urban areas and 22,000 in rural areas). From 10,687,000 jobs, its volume increased to 10,745,000 in the third quarter of 2014.
As for the most productive sectors in terms of job creation, the services sector leads the way with the creation of 60,000 jobs. The new jobs created in this sector are mainly due to the creation of 45,000 jobs by the "retail trade and repair of household goods" branch and 13,000 jobs by the "personal services" branch.
The construction sector experienced a recovery after losing an average of 33,000 jobs per year over the past three years. It is noted that 42,000 jobs were created in this sector, corresponding to a 4.6% increase in the sector's employment volume. The same is true for industry, which created 31,000 jobs, representing a 2.6% increase in the sector's employment volume, compared to an average annual loss of 16,000 jobs over the past three years. According to the HCP, these new jobs are due to the creation of 18,000 jobs by the "textiles, hosiery, and clothing" branch and 9,000 by the "food and beverage industries" branch. In contrast, "agriculture, forestry, and fishing" lost 75,000 jobs, a decrease of 1.8% in the sector's employment volume. It should be recalled that the sector created 156,000 jobs last year, with an annual average of 17,000 jobs in 2011 and 2012.
Industry: 25,000 jobs created in urban areas
Taking into account job creation by sector of activity and place of residence, it should be noted that in urban areas, except for the "agriculture, forestry, and fishing" sector, which experienced a loss of 5,000 jobs, corresponding to a 2.3% decrease in the sector's employment volume, all other sectors saw their employment volume increase. Thus, 25,000 jobs were created in the "industry, including crafts" sector (+2.6% of the sector's employment volume). A total of 11,000 jobs were created in the "services" sector (+0.3%) and 5,000 jobs in construction (+1%).
In rural areas, after an exceptional creation of 156,000 jobs last year, the "agriculture, forestry, and fishing" sector is the only sector to have lost jobs this year. It lost 75,000 jobs, which corresponds to -1.7% of the sector's employment volume; while other sectors all created jobs, with 49,000 jobs created by the "services" sector (+7.2% of the sector's employment volume), 37,000 jobs by construction (+9.5%), and 6,000 jobs in the "industry, including crafts" sector (+2.6%).
65% of the unemployed are aged 15 to 29
