The newspaper Jeune Afrique published two articles about the rise of supermarkets in Morocco. After noting the unequal competition between large supermarket chains and small shopkeepers, it presents an overview of the five major groups in the sector.
Acima
Acima, created in early 2002, is also the result of a partnership between ONA and Auchan. Acima opened eleven supermarkets in just over two years, with an average growth rate of six supermarkets per year, mainly located in city centers. Most of Acima's purchases are made by Cofarma.
Cofarma (Marjane brand)
This company, a joint subsidiary of ONA and Auchan (since January 2001), was the first to open a hypermarket in Rabat in 1991. The group owns nine hypermarkets, including two in Casablanca and Rabat, and one in Marrakech, Tangier, Fes, Agadir, and Mohammedia. In 2002, Cofarma achieved a turnover of 260 million euros.
Makro (Metro group)
Makro, present in Morocco since 1991 in the cash & carry sector, was acquired in 1997 by the German group Metro. It currently has six establishments located in Casablanca, Sale, Fes, Agadir, and Marrakech. The group's turnover was approximately 300 million euros in 2002. That same year, Metro began modernizing all its units and converting them to the Metro brand.
Aswak Assalam
This brand of the Chaâbi group currently has three stores located in Rabat, Marrakech, and Kenitra (where it opened a hypermarket last July). It seeks to differentiate itself by emphasizing its strong "Moroccan" identity and, for example, refusing to sell alcohol. In February 2004, Aswak Assalam signed a franchise agreement with the Casino group.
Hyper SA (Label Vie brand)
This Moroccan brand has six supermarkets, four of which are in Rabat. It has a modern supply platform and remodeled the interiors of its stores in the fall of 2001. Its development plan provides for the opening of sixteen units over five years. In the summer of 2002, the company acquired the two Supersol stores in Casablanca and Rabat, previously owned by Ahold Superdiplo Maroc.
