Several opportunities will arise during your career where you will need to negotiate your salary: annual performance review, new responsibilities, a new job…
Asking for a raise is a very difficult moment because in the professional world, talking about money remains a very sensitive, yet necessary subject for your professional development, whether within the same company or another.
Here are some tips to put all the odds in your favor during your salary negotiation, valid for all stages of your career, with a bonus, some mistakes to avoid!
First of all, you should know that once you have joined your position, it is more than certain that your salary will not increase during the first year. Therefore, you must negotiate your salary well from the start: before going into negotiation, make a good estimate of the salary corresponding to the position you wish to access.
When you are asked about your salary expectations, know that the recruiter wants above all to know if you are within the company's means or not. You must therefore research the salaries that correspond to the function you wish to take in order to communicate a "correct" range, a basis to start your negotiations and thus leave room for a compromise!
How to justify your request for an increase while holding the same position?
The most opportune time to ask for and receive a salary increase is undoubtedly the one that follows your evaluation, generally annual.
You can also ask for your salary to be increased when you have a significant workload or when you have succeeded remarkably in all your projects.
In order to be consistent during your negotiation sessions, and to justify your new salary expectations, you must make a list of all the tasks you have accomplished since your arrival in the company so that you can demonstrate, through quantifiable results, everything you have been able to bring to the structure: uncompromising arguments that support your merit for a salary increase!
Mistakes to avoid!
- Avoid any confrontational or aggressive attitude. You must remain positive and always stay on a professional level
- Avoid any comparison to other employees
- Be convinced to convince. You cannot persuade someone if you are not convinced yourself. You are defending an idea when you believe in it. It is the same process that governs a negotiation. Only negotiate if you are convinced of your merit!
- Never lie about your salary because if your employer asks to see your payslip, you will lose all your credibility and your chances of increasing your salary!
Finally, don't focus all your attention on salary, some benefits are just as rewarding as salary such as bonuses, company car, health insurance,… So try your luck, negotiate without getting upset!
