The workplace brings together diverse personalities, with different values, expectations, and individual approaches to work. These differences can sometimes cause tension between colleagues, as it's clear that getting along with everyone is almost impossible. We must be cautious and avoid clashes between colleagues, as they can quickly affect morale and productivity for everyone.
Given that we spend on average a third of our lives at work, it is essential to have a good ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.
Here are some tips for maintaining good relationships with your colleagues and dealing with the more difficult ones!
Respect others!
Treat others with respect. Look at the positive sides of your colleagues; they can only respect you for that.
Communicate!
• Discuss important issues in person rather than by phone or email.
• Respond to your voicemails and emails as quickly as possible.
• Listen to the other person by giving them your full attention and without interrupting them.
• Ask questions when you don't understand what a colleague wants or needs.
Build trust!
Trust is the basis of good relationships. Keep your personal and professional commitments! Let people know they can count on you. Your colleagues will see you as a reliable resource and will be more likely to engage with you in a respectful relationship.
Be flexible!
Everyone has their own methodology; there is not only one way of doing things. Therefore, don't limit yourself to the idea that only your way of doing things is valid. Recognize that it is often possible to benefit from the experience and perspective of others; you will be able to better execute the tasks assigned to you.
Recognize your limits!
You must always recognize your limits, because nobody likes to be criticized, a remark even more valid at work because most people are proud!
So if you need to make a suggestion or offer your help, do so in a way that acknowledges the other person's efforts. Also, remember that everyone has a different conception of their personal space, their private life, and their personal belongings.
