With 223 companies joining the Modernization Program (PMN) in the first 5 months of 2010 – compared to 153 during the same period in 2009 – the number of participants increased by 45%. This shows renewed interest, especially after the first signs of recovery following the international financial crisis.
This interest is mainly seen in the textile-clothing sector (45%), mechanical and electrical industries (14%), and agri-food industries (13%).
Since its launch in 1995, 4757 companies have joined the PMN. In addition, 3187 companies received approval from the Modernization Steering Committee (COPIL) to implement their modernization plans. Total investments reached 5384 million dinars (MD). Other applications are under review.
Regarding Priority Technological Investments (ITP) in equipment to improve company competitiveness, 296 applications were approved in the first 5 months of 2010 for intangible investments of around 15.5 MD.
A total of 4170 ITP applications have been approved to date, representing total investments of 298 MD.
Digital competitiveness has become the watchword for the coming years, a driver of growth and employment. The introduction of ICTs, particularly information processing and transmission technologies, in Tunisian companies is strongly encouraged. A ministerial commission has been created in partnership with the Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce, and Crafts (UTICA) to drive this process, said Mr. Mohamed Tahar Bellassoued, Director General of the Industry Modernization Office, to the TAP agency.
Separately, the results of the 7th PMN evaluation survey – conducted by the Tunisian Institute for Competitiveness and Quantitative Studies (ITCEQ) with the help of a private consulting firm – revealed that Tunisia has become the largest exporter from the Southern Mediterranean countries to the EU.
The supervision rate increased from 9% to 19%, and the share of exports with technological content doubled in overall exports, rising from 12% to 25%. Currently, 1300 companies are certified to international standards, and an estimated 2000 companies had integrated ICTs in 2009.
The modernization program will include new features, including "the ability for companies to soon join the PMN online and track their application status using an access code. ITP applications will also be submitted online, going paperless."
