Will a new airline soon be born in Morocco? Or should we say that a new subsidiary will be created by the national company, Royal Air Maroc, next June? The information was confirmed this Sunday, January 18, 2009, by the CEO of RAM, Driss Benhima.
"We will resume the domestic network of RAM recently abandoned by Régional Airlines," confirms Driss Benhima, quoted by the French newspaper, "Le Quotidien du tourisme." The new company will therefore be born in place of Régional Airlines, which has left the domestic skies empty. Régional Airlines has indeed come under the control of Air Arabia, the first and largest low-cost airline in the Middle East and North Africa. Driss Benhima's statement corroborates the remarks made by the Minister of Equipment and Transport, Karim Ghellab, on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, in response to an oral question in the House of Representatives on "the situation of RAM." The new subsidiary, whose name is not yet known, will be entirely dedicated to domestic flights and will have 8 aircraft with 70 seats, in addition to being "in the colors of RAM, with RAM hostesses," as its CEO likes to emphasize. Its development plan extends over two phases according to its initiators. A replacement phase with increased frequencies to cities with high potential such as Oujda, Tangier, Fes and Agadir; then, a growth phase with increased flight frequencies. "It is the Royal Air Maroc brand that we are committed to here. We must therefore offer a quality product to our fellow citizens," insists Driss Benhima.
The establishment of a domestic network with a diversification plan, as assured by RAM officials, will allow a reduction in transit time in the Casablanca hub for international flights, easier domestic travel at attractive prices for the greater good of domestic tourism desired by the Ministry of Tourism through the Biladi plan.
