When the Boss Procrastinates...

Your boss keeps putting things off, and it's hurting your work. How should you react?

People who procrastinate often feel overwhelmed by their tasks. They show a lack of self-confidence, which is harmful to their job. This may be the case with your boss.

"If he postpones decisions, it's out of worry," explains Joëlle Charpentier, a certified human resources consultant and organizational development consultant at Maletto et associés, a firm specializing in organizational development and training. If the manager has to meet with an employee to talk about their attitude and is afraid of their reaction, he may postpone the meeting. "This shows his difficulty in taking responsibility," adds Ms. Charpentier.
Acting with Tact

If your boss's procrastination is hurting you, you need to explain how it affects your work. For example, a colleague is causing you problems and your superior is slow to address it? "Make your boss aware of the problem in a gentle and understanding way. Explain to him, without accusing him, that you would like to work in a healthy environment. Then, listen to what he has to say," explains Melissa Lemieux, a life coach, author, and speaker.

However, be careful about your attitude. "If you adopt a harsh tone or threaten to resign, you are not offering any solution to remedy the situation and you will only cause damage. Nobody likes to be yelled at or attacked. Even less so your boss," she explains.
