Tunisie Telecom has just completed a number of projects with high technological value. The veteran of Tunisian telephone operators has not ignored its role in the popularization and development of ICT.
Audinet spoke with Mr. Mousser Jerbi (Central Director of Business Markets) to shed light on the impact of the projects implemented by Tunisie Telecom and the next steps.
Audinet: You have just inaugurated the "Hannibal" cable; can you tell us more about this project and its added value?
M. Mousser Jerbi: Tunisia is acquiring a new milestone: Hannibal, the 100% Tunisian submarine cable, once again confirms its pioneering position in the field of telecommunications. Tunisie Telecom has just provided Tunisia with the first purely Tunisian submarine fiber optic cable on November 13, 2009.
With an initial capacity of 40 gigabits per second, expandable to 3200 Gbps, this submarine cable linking Kelibia to the Italian city of Mazara is one of the most important telecommunications backbones in the Mediterranean basin, with a length of 180 kilometers of optical fibers. Hannibal will strengthen Tunisia's international connectivity. Tunisia's external connections will be more secure. Credited worldwide with good rankings in terms of competitiveness, crisis resistance, and quality of life, Tunisia continues to distinguish itself in the promotion of Information and Communication Technologies thanks to the far-sighted policy of President Ben Ali. Tunisia's projects and achievements in telecommunications are numerous.
Audinet: Tunisia offers high-speed solutions to businesses through greater fiber optic connections; what are your plans in this area?
M. Mousser Jerbi: Tunisie Telecom now offers a wide range of high-speed offers based on fiber optic access: - Access to the data network through point-to-point connections with speeds reaching 1 Gb/s - Access to the IP/MPLS network for high-speed data exchange in VPN mode. - Internet access
More than fifty business areas are covered by fiber optics throughout the country, including about twenty industrial zones. 500 km of fiber optic cables are planned to be installed, covering more than 2000 businesses.
Audinet: What are your future projects in terms of high-speed internet outside of fiber optics? Do you plan to reach 8 Mbps, like Morocco?
M. Mousser Jerbi: We have developed the DSL range of offers for businesses by launching the SDSL offer at the beginning of the year, which allows unlimited Internet access with symmetrical transmission in both directions.
We are launching the Corporate ADSL offer, which allows speeds of up to 8 Mbps with a service level agreement (SLA) on activation and restoration times in case of disruptions.
Audinet: Your project to control public transport vehicles by GPS is starting to take off; how can you present it, and what are the development prospects?
M. Mousser Jerbi: Tunisie Telecom now offers its customers the Corporate Tracking solution, an innovative mobile offer for companies wishing to efficiently manage and track their vehicle fleets (cars, boats, trucks, trailers, etc.) using a location system combining satellite (GPS) and mobile (GPRS) technologies. It is complemented by a Fleet Management System "FMS" solution that allows: - Real-time regulation and response to disruptions, - Ensuring the safety of customers and personnel, - Reducing operating costs and improving the productivity of personnel and rolling stock, - Improving service quality.
These offers are provided in partnership with GPS "Satellite Geolocation" and FMS solution providers. TT is the leader in geolocation and FMS solutions, with more than 5000 geolocated SIM cards. TT intends to strengthen its leading market position by further developing its service offering through partnership projects around business solutions.
Audinet: What are your future projects, especially with the arrival of a third telephone operator, whose entry into operation should be imminent?
M. Mousser Jerbi: As part of the company's transformation, TT has implemented an action plan aimed at diversifying its products and solutions to meet the expectations of its customers. This plan, which concerns all product lines (fixed, mobile, and data) and all market segments (residential and business), will continue in 2010. Today, TT is well-equipped to face competition.
We would like to point out that since 2007, there has been a dedicated structure for businesses and professionals, whose mission is to present this market segment with the best telecommunications tools and support them in the development of their activities. This structure consists of: • A team of sales representatives and technical sales representatives whose objective is to offer: • A single point of contact and a privileged relationship • A unique view of the account across all products • A thorough understanding of needs • Advice on technical choices • Tailor-made solutions • Close monitoring during the implementation phase • A dedicated call center for businesses (the Corporate Contact Center). This center, which is available 7 days a week, is responsible for handling all business requests, regardless of the product line (fixed and mobile telephony, data transmission, international products, and value-added services). The Corporate Contact Center is now a determining factor in customer satisfaction through the quality of the response and efficiency in execution. • A showroom to test the new "Business" solutions offered by Tunisie Telecom. This is an exhibition and demonstration space for "High Tech" telecommunications solutions for professionals and businesses, regardless of their sector of activity. The solutions offered cover all product lines: fixed, data, mobile, and convergent services. • Several "Business Centers" throughout the country to serve our customers.
Audinet: Do you plan to introduce new mobile technologies for businesses, such as "BlackBerry"?
M. Mousser Jerbi: Tunisie Telecom is the only provider of BB solutions on the Tunisian market. The offer, launched in March, has been a great success, with more than 3500 smartphones sold. New smartphones will soon be introduced to the market, and the solution will be extended to prepaid customers.
Tunisie Telecom will continue to diversify its product range by providing its high-end professional and residential customers with a wide range of smartphones based on their specific needs.
Indeed, the introduction of new terminals is planned by Tunisie Telecom during 2010.
