Morocco: Unemployment rate falls to 8.7% in the second quarter of 2015.

The unemployment rate in Morocco decreased in the second quarter of 2015, with the creation of 38,000 jobs, indicates the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in its economic report on employment.
Between the second quarter of 2014 and that of 2015, the Moroccan economy created 38,000 jobs, the result of the creation of 72,000 jobs in urban areas and a loss of 34,000 in rural areas, specifies the HCP report posted on its website. The HCP states that the 'unemployment rate thus fell from 9.3% to 8.7% nationally', from 14.2% to 13.4% in urban areas and from 3.6% to 3.3% in rural areas. As for the underemployment rate, it increased by 0.4 points, rising from 10.4% to 10.8% nationally, and from 9.2% to 9.7% in urban areas and from 11.7% to 12% in rural areas. In addition, the overall volume of unemployment in Morocco decreased to 1,041,000, the result, according to Ahmed Lahlimi Alami's department, of a decrease of 73,000 people, including 54,000 in urban areas and 19,000 in rural areas. Between the second quarter of 2014 and that of 2015, there was a slight decrease in the activity rate.
More jobs created in urban areas
With 11,970,000 people, the active population aged 15 and over decreased, between the second quarters of 2014 and 2015, by 0.3% nationally (-0.9% in rural areas and +0.3% in urban areas), explains the HCP. On the other hand, the working-age population increased by 1.5%, a situation that led to a tiny 0.9-point decrease in the activity rate, which fell from 48.9% to 48% between the two periods. Finally, in terms of employment, 125,000 paid jobs were created during this period, including 65,000 in urban areas and 60,000 in rural areas. In its previous economic report for the first quarter of 2015, the HCP noted a decrease in the unemployment rate from 10.2% to 9.9%, with an overall volume of 1.57 million people (a decrease of 34,000 people).
