How to avoid burnout? Or, better yet, how to avoid burning out?
It is wrong to think that you need to reduce your activity and calm down a bit.
On the contrary, it is important to stay active, but of course in areas and with people you enjoy.
Here are some tips that will help you:
Do one thing at a time: it is better to focus completely on one thing rather than halfway on several.
Learn to plan: everyone is short of time today. This is why it is important to learn to share your time effectively and to define priorities. (see our file on time management).
Seek to discover what matters in your life: let go of the rushed life from time to time to focus on what really matters to you. Reorient yourself if you stray from your priorities. Remember that life is much more than work.
Learn to say no: even by doing your best, you won't be able to do everything or satisfy everyone. Assert yourself and dare to refuse. Also, don't constantly take on other people's tasks or problems.
Listen to yourself: Headaches, susceptibility, tendency to isolate yourself: these are not random signs. Listen and intervene in time if necessary.
Exercise: this may be the last thing that inspires you when you come home exhausted from work, but it's worth it. You will feel great fatigue, but also great physical satisfaction afterwards.
Don't worry, but act: worrying has never served any purpose. Take your problem in hand or learn to solve it by talking to good advisors (colleagues, acquaintances...).
Avoid perfectionism: Don't try to be perfect at everything, an average result is usually enough. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone learns from them. Forget the idea that what you do yourself will be better done; dare to delegate.
Be yourself: accept yourself as you are, with your flaws. Your self-esteem should not depend on the opinions of others.
Do pleasant and sociable things: meet your friends for outings, go see an entertaining movie, go have lunch with your colleagues, read a relaxing novel,… allow yourself these moments of relaxation without feeling guilty.
Laugh!: Work may be a serious thing, but there's nothing to stop you from laughing. Don't lose your sense of humor. Remember to put things in perspective and see things in a broader perspective.
