For the 16th consecutive year, leading Moroccan seafood companies will be exhibiting at the "Seafood Expo Global," Europe's largest trade show dedicated to seafood products, opening Tuesday in Brussels.
Encouraged by the ever-increasing number of attendees and the plethora of economic opportunities offered by this major seafood industry event, some thirty national companies will travel to the European capital to showcase the richness and diversity of the Moroccan offer and highlight the evolution of the seafood processing industry in the Kingdom.
And the figures confirm this. At the previous edition, "Seafood Expo Global" attracted over 35,000 professionals and more than 1,700 exhibitors from around the world. Moroccan participation allowed our companies to forge concrete partnerships with their counterparts and secure significant orders worth several million dirhams.
The objective of this consistent participation in this key event for seafood professionals remains undoubtedly the conquest of new markets, the development of future partnerships, the diversification of outlets and, therefore, the consolidation of Morocco's position as a regional platform for the enhancement and export of seafood products.
In fact, this economic mission is part of an overall strategy to promote the "Morocco" label that the government is implementing through a real policy of prospecting new markets, supporting exporting companies, participating in international trade fairs and organizing information and communication campaigns that highlight the quality of Moroccan products.
The interest of the Moroccan sector in "Seafood Expo Global" is clearly shown both by the importance of the national companies participating each year, and by the exhibition space they occupy year after year and the quality of the products showcased.
Indeed, since their very first participation in this event, the number of Moroccan companies has steadily increased from five 15 years ago to 35 today. Similarly, the Moroccan pavilion has constantly evolved, particularly in terms of size and layout. While it did not exceed 50 square meters in 2000, it now brings together the best professionals in the sector in an imposing 600-square-meter stand.
The more than tenfold increase in the size of the Moroccan stand speaks volumes about Morocco's immense fishing potential, the leading country in Africa and the 25th largest producer worldwide in the field of maritime fishing, with an annual production exceeding one million tons.
The maritime fishing sector contributes 2 to 3% of Morocco's GDP and accounts for more than 55% of the country's food exports and 16% of total exports. It is also a strategic sector that contributes to macroeconomic balances and job creation (660,000 in 2013).
In 2014, Morocco produced 1.3 million tons of seafood, of which approximately 500,000 tons were exported. 80% of production is intended to supply the seafood processing industry and 20% to the local market. Moroccan fish exports exceeded 15.16 billion dirhams and the added value of this sector has increased by 33% since 2009.
