Your clothes, your general appearance, and your body language say more about you than any speech. Increasingly important in business, your look needs to be worked on and refined to give a good image of yourself.
Look is not just about clothes. It refers to a way of dressing, a general appearance, a style, an attitude. It reflects the self-image you present to others.
"After 4 seconds, a person already has a 40% judgment of you," says Arnaud Riou, a trainer specializing in oral and behavioral communication techniques. "Contrary to what we think, it's not so much what we say that counts, but what we are."
A good balance
With equal skills, the person who presents themselves best is always favored. In business, self-image is now considered an unconscious criterion of discrimination. Hence the importance of mastering and working on your look.
The goal is to find a balance between your personality and your professional obligations, adapting your image to the environment in which you operate. It is obvious that you will not dress the same way to work in an advertising agency, an investment bank, or a large luxury house. It also depends on the position held and the dress code specific to the company.
Mistakes to avoid
Unpolished shoes, dirty nails, sloppy makeup, wrinkled clothes, messy hair… Pay particular attention to these details that immediately give a bad image of you.
Take your body shape into account. If you are overweight, favor vertical lines.
Choose colors that enhance you and don't mix more than three.
Avoid overly casual outfits that might give an unprofessional image.
If you are a woman, avoid skirts that are too short or too slit and necklines that are too low. You risk losing credibility and attracting malicious comments.
Focus on basics
In general, you won't go wrong by focusing on the basics: dark suit, black trousers, light shirt, straight skirt, fitted jacket. Then, nothing prevents you from adding some originality or asserting your personality with accessories. Long necklace, belt, leather bag, scarf – for women –, club tie, matching handbag, bow tie – for men –… these little extras will give you style and will be a sign that you care about detail.
