Tunisia, Soon an Aerospace Business Hub

Exploring ways to create a more favorable environment for the aerospace industry and attract new businesses to Tunisia was the focus of a meeting held Wednesday in Tunis. The meeting was part of a visit by a delegation of aerospace business leaders from Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Managers from 13 French SMEs operating in aerospace services, engineering, and aeronautical and mechanical equipment presented their activities and the goals of their visit to Tunisia.

Their aim is to find logistical support and opportunities for partnerships and subcontracting in Tunisia. They noted that Tunisia is particularly attractive because most major global companies in this sector are likely to face constraints this year due to international instability and reduced demand.

Ms. Mongia Khemiri, Director General of FIPA (the agency for promoting foreign investment), stated that Tunisia, which has experienced sustained economic growth for several years, is projected to grow by 4 to 4.5% in 2009.

She affirmed that the country, with its significant legislative and regulatory advantages and skilled workforce, has all the assets to become a regional platform, or even a business hub, particularly for companies operating in the aerospace sector.

She recalled that about twenty aerospace companies are already established in Tunisia, including major groups such as Latécoère, Zodiac, and Sogerma.

Mr. Sami Zaoui, representing Ernest & Young Tunisia, presented a study conducted by this international consulting firm on the development prospects of SMEs until 2016. The study shows that Tunisia is one of the leading industrial exporters on the southern shore of the Mediterranean and serves as a platform between the two shores. It possesses numerous advantages (skilled workforce, modern logistics) to reassure European, particularly French, investors during this period of uncertain crisis.

A Win-Win Partnership to Overcome the Economic Crisis

He emphasized the importance of leveraging Tunisia's potential through a win-win partnership as the most appropriate solution to overcome the global financial crisis.

He recalled that Tunisia aims to double its exports, from €8.3 billion (approximately 15 billion dinars) to €16.6 billion (30 billion dinars) by 2016.

Mr. F. Klaus, Director of Industry at the Toulouse Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that the "Toulouse/Bordeaux aerospace mission" will visit three sites in Tunisia, including the site of the Aérolia group (a French leader in aerostructures), and has scheduled 130 meetings with Tunisian industrial companies.

Mr. Philippe Cussonnet, president of GITAS (the grouping of aeronautical and space industries), presented this structure, created in 2006, which brings together 19 companies operating in the aerospace sector in Tunisia.
