It's not always easy to stay fully focused on your work at home when a TV, your couch, or other distractions beckon. Not to mention household chores that require your attention. How do you stay motivated and make the most of your workday while teleworking?
Entrepreneurs Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson from the software company 37signals, in their book 'Remote: Office Not Required', offer a series of strategies for staying focused and motivated while working from home.
Here are some of their tips…
1. Create a Schedule
Being able to work when and where you want is one of the advantages of teleworking. But the lack of structure can also be detrimental to productivity. Divide your day into different blocks and give yourself a break after each block. The important thing is to use a relatively consistent schedule every day. Of course, you can deviate sometimes, but don't make it a habit. Routine helps you at home to switch more easily between private and professional life.
2. Impeccable Outfit
This doesn't necessarily mean you have to stay home in a suit. But it's to your advantage. So leave the pajamas for later and dress as if you were going to the office. This creates a work-conducive atmosphere. In the evening, you can go back to your jogging suit and put on your flip-flops.
3. Mix Work From Home and Office
Combine teleworking and office work. For example, check your emails from home and leave after the traffic jam. You save time and frustration. You can also work calmly at home on an important project and then attend a meeting at the office. Of course, this assumes that the employer is flexible.
4. Think Coffee Shop
Isolation is the enemy of the teleworker. If it prevents you from concentrating, instead of helping you, consider changing your environment, take a trip to the local coffee shop, park, or library. It may seem very strange, and yet, the presence of others, even without knowing them, can work miracles in terms of productivity.
5. One Electronic Device for Each Use
Switching from work to relaxation is particularly difficult when your emails, phone conversations, and other communications, both private and professional, are mixed up. Often it's inevitable, but take advantage of it if your employer offers you a work phone or a professional laptop. Use them for your professional activities only, while you reserve your smartphone or tablet for private use. This way, you'll completely disconnect from your work once your teleworking day is over.
