Interview Outfit: Take Care of Your Look!

How should you dress for a job interview? A new edition of Aude Roy's book, a personal and professional image coach, can help you approach it comfortably and beautifully. Short summary.

We are sometimes unaware of the impact of our image: clothes, gestures, tone of voice... Yet, this is what makes the biggest impression when we introduce ourselves to someone, even more than our speech... to which we generally attach so much importance (words account for 7% of communication vectors, according to Mehrabian's 1971 studies).

Aude Roy's book ("Give a good image of yourself") is clear: the image we convey to others reveals our personality, both positively and negatively: our flaws show, and our qualities are exposed if we want them to be. You would indeed like to hide the former, and it is rather necessary to highlight the latter. Your unique talents can attract an employer's attention: the first step is therefore... to know them!

Find your style
A little introspection to begin with: what were your family traditions from the point of view of clothing? Was it important or accessory? How were women considered? Men? Was elegance criticized? Did fashion matter? How did your parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, and friends dress? Did you wear original clothes for parties? Did you like your body? Were you considered a beautiful, attractive person? Did you take care of your hair? Did you wear perfume?

You have a history, a culture, specific beliefs that you have inherited but which do not necessarily correspond to your current personality. What would you like to keep? Abandon? Would you like to learn to take care of yourself if it didn't concern you until now?

Highlight yourself

Your physical characteristics will not change: you are tall or short, thin or round... This is an important part of your personality, it is your history. Ensure a healthy diet, exercise to stay healthy, but don't dream of a model size you'll never have! You can always look for photographs of personalities whose style you like and create a book that will inspire you, the ideal being to find a few models close to your morphology...

A rule for refining your appearance is to show your movements, not to hide yourself: free your neck, your wrists - for women: your legs, keeping a flattering length... Where the garment stops, you stop your interlocutor's gaze; on this point, men and women have a different sensitivity: be careful!

Also, don't "cut" your silhouette with different colors if you are rather round... By wearing gathers, drapes, flared shapes, you widen yourself: prefer fitted clothes (but especially not tight or too low-cut for women, which would be bad taste).

Choose colors that suit your complexion

Also ask your entourage how they see you, explaining that you are doing an image assessment for your job interviews. What first impression do you give? Do the colors you like suit you?

Color is a language: for example, blue is the color of communication, the sea and the sky, but also melancholy and uniforms; yellow is sun, gaiety, but also a symbol of deceit; red is movement, passion, sensuality and... violence. Black is a non-color, it is authority, elegance but it is also a sign of mourning: don't overuse it... Try different colors placed under your face, in daylight, to identify those that give you a good complexion.

Respect the dress code of your profession
Each professional sector has its rules and dress codes: avoid piercings to apply for a job in finance, or a gray suit if you are looking for a creative position! Your interlocutors must be able to imagine you by their side after your interview... Human resources, finance, IT or public administration... engineers or politicians, artists or caregivers...

Find out about the codes of your professional environment because they always have great psychological importance.

Demeanor, look, smile
A few more practical tips in conclusion: your demeanor speaks of your dynamism, your motivation; your look is a "mirror of the soul", it reveals your capacity for attention and your vitality, your honesty; your smile is a sign of openness; your handshake says a lot about your energy and your relaxation as well as all your gestures during the interview...

In short, you understand, your image is you as much as words, or even more... Take care of it, take care of yourself!
