For foreigners wishing to work in Tunisia, there are many job opportunities. However, it should be noted that certain legal provisions and conditions are provided for by law for foreigners wishing to work in Tunisia, according to agreements concluded between the Tunisian Republic and foreign countries.
In chapters II "Employment of foreign labor" and III "Immigration of workers to Tunisia", the Tunisian labor code specifies these provisions governed by articles 258 to 277.
The most important thing to know if you want to work in Tunisia is that to carry out any paid work, you must have an employment contract and a residence permit stating "authorized to work in Tunisia" (Art. 258-2).
Regarding the employment contract, its duration must not exceed one year and it is possible to renew it only once. However, when it comes to the employment of foreigners in their companies operating in Tunisia as part of development projects approved by the competent authorities, in this case the employment contract can be renewed several times (following Art. 258-2).
As for the application for a residence permit for a foreigner wishing to work in Tunisia, it is governed by law 68-7 of 08/03/1968 concerning the status of foreigners and decree n°92-716 of 20/04/1992 regulating the entry and stay of foreigners in Tunisia.
Concerning the rights and obligations of foreign workers in Tunisia, according to Article 263 of the Tunisian labor code, they benefit from the same rights and are subject to the same obligations resulting from labor relations and applicable to Tunisian workers.
As for foreigners born in Tunisia and residing there permanently, they are exempt from the employment contract but must hold a residence permit stating "authorized to hold a paid job in Tunisia" according to Article 271 of the Tunisian labor code.
In the case of foreigners wishing to work in Tunisia, they must first obtain an employment contract which will then allow them to apply for a residence permit. To facilitate procedures for foreigners wishing to work in Tunisia, the various consulates have departments responsible for providing information on the various procedures and the rights and obligations of their nationals who wish to settle and work in Tunisia.
