Professionals in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector have called for the creation of "a Ministry of Communication Technology and Digital Economy" within the new government.
At a meeting with the media on Wednesday, January 28, at the UTICA headquarters, they sent a message to the head of government, Habib Essid, "demanding a political and economic will to guarantee Tunisia advances in the ICT field."
Taoufik Halila, president of the National Chamber of Telecom Network Integrators, mentioned the recent appointments in the new government, emphasizing that "responsibility in the public sector can be given to experts working in the private sector." He insisted on the need to give the ICT sector the place it deserves, especially since the global economy now relies on digital technology.
For his part, the president of the National Federation of ICTs, Kais Sellami, considered that the ICT sector, which contributes 7.21% to GDP, still suffers from the slow pace of decision-making. He added that the objectives set within the framework of the national strategic plan for the ICT sector "Digital Tunisia 2018" (2014/2018), particularly the creation of 25,000 jobs, have not been achieved.
The president of the National Chamber of IT Services and Engineering Companies, Karim Hrass, indicated that around 40 projects in the ICT sector are blocked. These projects can create thousands of jobs for graduates of higher institutes of technological studies (ISET), he indicated, recalling that the unemployment rate for ISET graduates is around 60%.
