Tunisia - Energy: Nearly 20,000 jobs in renewable energy...

The launch of renewable energy projects could create 7 to 20,000 sustainable jobs for young people in Tunisia by 2030. This is the estimate of Dr. Isabel Shafer, a professor at the University of Berlin.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 27 in Tunis, at a conference on "Clean Energy and Youth Unemployment in the Maghreb," organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Ms. Shafer added that "renewable energy is a sector of technological innovation and the future for Tunisia, insofar as it will boost the country's economy, especially if it focuses on exporting green energy."

On the Maghreb level, the academic points out that energy demand will increase by 50% over the next decade, hence the need to diversify energy sources.

In the same context, Jacob Kolster, Chief Operating Officer of the North Africa region at the AfDB, indicated that the choice of the theme of renewable energy and youth unemployment targets the solution to two challenges, namely employment and energy resources, currently facing Tunisia. Because "the unemployment rate of young Tunisians currently exceeds 35%, which is considerable," he noted.

Regarding the production of green energy, Mr. Kolster estimated that it is within Tunisia's reach, whose favorable climatic conditions (sun and wind) open up great prospects for the development of renewable energies. In fact, Tunisia has a sunshine rate exceeding 3,000 hours per year, which allows for further development of this promising niche.

Representatives of the various organizations involved in the energy sector in ministerial departments and civil society took part in this meeting.
