Minister of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, Mohamed Lamine Chakhari, announced at a seminar on January 26th, 2012, that 45 out of 99 planned industrial zones will be located in regional development areas.
He stated that work is already finished on 10 zones covering 366 hectares, including 4 regional development zones spanning 50 hectares. Work is also underway on 22 more zones totaling 453 hectares.
He emphasized the importance of creating industrial zones and technology parks with suitable infrastructure to attract businesses to Tunisia. A regional development program, launched in January 2012, aims to boost business creation and employment in these areas.
Industrial zones, built to international standards and tailored to regional needs, offer favorable conditions for project development. A regional consultation process will help determine project sizes for each region.
The Minister highlighted job creation as the key to reducing unemployment, and the government’s focus on developing disadvantaged areas and restarting previously stalled projects. He noted the encouraging interest from investors in regional development zones.
