Tunisia: Unemployment rate falls to 15.2%

The Minister of Vocational Training and Employment, Hafedh Laamouri, declared Thursday to TAP that the unemployment rate, which was 16.5%, fell to 15.2% and that the number of unemployed people currently stands at 605,000.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference of directors of employment offices and independent work, held on December 18 and 19, 2014 in Hammamet, Laamouri stressed that it is possible to reduce the unemployment rate to 11% over the next five years.

Laamouri expressed optimism about the improvement of the situation in Tunisia from the second half of 2015, especially since foreign and Tunisian investors are waiting for the formation of the new government to know its economic and financial policy.

He announced the opening of bridges between higher education and vocational training in order to offer new perspectives to graduates of vocational training in order to make it a serious and promising choice.

He indicated that the new employment policy, which came into effect this year, consists in working more to reduce the unemployment rate over the next five years, indicating that there are real opportunities to create between 90,000 and 100,000 additional jobs per year, which will reduce the unemployment rate to 10 or 11%.

He stressed that the encouragement and support for the creation of micro-projects has largely contributed to reducing the unemployment rate.

Laamouri specified, in this regard, that particular interest has been given to this issue within the framework of a strategy aimed at financing 12,000 projects in 2014 (nine thousand projects were carried out).

The ministry, he said, has put in place an action plan over the next five years aimed at carrying out 15,000 projects per year, or the creation of at least 30,000 jobs, in addition to the impetus of the initiative to create socio-economic businesses within the framework of the solidarity economy with an average of 2,000 businesses per year.

He indicated that the number of unemployed people currently stands at 500,000 and that tens of thousands of job applications in the construction, public works, textile, leather, footwear and furniture sectors remain unsatisfied due to the attachment of young people to administrative functions.

Laamouri indicated that his department has begun, as part of the implementation of the new employment policy, the opening of employment offices in countries with strong employment opportunities, such as the Gulf States.

He also spoke about the distance learning program in English, set up in collaboration with the British Cultural Centre, to strengthen the chances of job seekers finding work in Tunisia or abroad.

The conference provided an opportunity to learn about the main axes of the national employment and independent work strategy 2014/2017.

Workshops will be devoted to this issue during the second day of this meeting.

The "Marhaba" label for the quality of the welcome was awarded on this occasion to 11 employment and independent work offices, as well as to four executive employment and independent work offices and three initiative spaces.
