Tunisia - SONEDE: Customer debt reaches approximately 234 MD

The debt owed to the National Water Exploitation and Distribution Company (SONEDE) by its customers reached nearly 234 million dinars (MD) by the end of May 2014, according to the company's CEO, Saad Siddik.

He added during a press conference held Friday in Tunis that this debt is spread among the company's different customer types: domestic use (138 MD), administrations (45 MD), local authorities (26 MD), and industrial and tourist use (25 MD).

This debt is likely to worsen the difficult financial situation the company has been experiencing since 2008, he said, specifying that the cumulative negative net result reached 208 MD by 2013.

The company, a national asset, needs more than ever to regain its financial balance to ensure the continuity of its services, he added, noting the need to maintain, if not strengthen, the social vocation of this public service.

He indicated that 97% of SONEDE's customers receive drinking water at a price below its real cost.

In this regard, the average price of 30 cubic meters of water over a single quarter is estimated at 0.417 dinars in Tunisia, compared to 1.002 dinars in Morocco and 3.633 dinars in Spain.
