Tunisia: Renewable Energy to Create 7,000 to 20,000 Jobs (AfDB)

“Launching renewable energy projects can create 7,000 to 20,000 sustainable jobs for young people in Tunisia by 2030,” said Dr. Isabel Shafer, a university professor (University of Berlin).
Speaking Tuesday in Tunis at a conference on “Clean Energy and Youth Unemployment in the Maghreb” organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Ms. Shafer added that “renewable energy is a sector of technological innovation and the future for Tunisia, insofar as it will boost the country's economy, especially if it focuses on exporting green energy.”
On the Maghreb level, the academic noted that energy demand will increase by 50% over the next decade, hence the need to diversify energy sources. In the same context, Mr. Jacob Kolster, Chief Operating Officer for the North Africa region at the AfDB, said that “choosing the theme of renewable energy and youth unemployment targets the solution to two challenges, namely employment and energy resources, currently facing Tunisia. In fact, the unemployment rate for young Tunisians currently exceeds 35%, which is considerable,” he noted.
Regarding the production of green energy, the official estimated that it is within Tunisia's reach, whose favorable climatic conditions (sun and wind) open up great prospects for the development of renewable energies. In fact, Tunisia has more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year, which allows for further development of this promising sector.
