A Little Humor to Ease Workplace Tension

Facing difficult or challenging situations (crises, boring meetings, organizational changes, misunderstandings regarding certain decisions…), few people dare to frankly express what's wrong within the company. A feeling of dissatisfaction and demotivation then sets in. To remedy this, some companies use "humor" to get through these rough patches…

A very promising new "humorist" concept

The idea was developed by Serge Grudzinski in 1993, who then decided to found Humour Consulting Group. The goal is to improve understanding of management issues and resolve conflicts through humor.

Indeed, this new concept is based on two steps. The first is to conduct an internal audit of the company through individual interviews with team members and company managers to identify existing problems within the organization. Then, once the problems are identified, the auditors present a dramatization of them.

The identified problems are thus caricatured in a scene or a series of scenes. Generally, people laugh at the situation and become aware of the triviality of the problems when they see the ridiculous version of reality…

This awareness then translates into a change in attitude and an acceptance of the environment in which individuals evolve.

Humor, a very important aspect internally but not taken seriously!

Of course, work is serious. But who said you can't do your job well while joking occasionally?

It's undeniable that work is better done in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere rather than in a very serious and stressful way. In situations of internal crises, humor allows you to approach problems with a little lightness and perspective. It helps to ease tension, relieve pressure, and sometimes even de-dramatize a particularly difficult situation!

Humor is also an excellent management tool because it allows you to subtly convey messages where standardized speeches fail. It proves to be an excellent way to defuse tension within teams, while improving the work atmosphere; one of the main criteria for employee retention…
