Office Life: Employees Prefer a Good Atmosphere to a High Salary

According to American researchers, an employee in a self-managed team will primarily seek a good work environment where they can thrive, grow, and assert themselves professionally, rather than a high salary without human interaction.

An employee only aspires to one thing: the highest possible salary. Well, no! Even if conventional wisdom is persistent, researchers from the University of Iowa in the United States have shown that an employee who works in an autonomous team without a designated leader will prefer a team with a good atmosphere rather than a high salary. On the other hand, if relationships are conflictual within a team, salary will be the main deciding factor and also the best way to improve performance.

This American study, based on the behavior of 587 employees in 45 manager-less teams, also reveals that teams with a friendly atmosphere are the most effective in their work. This is confirmed by Greg Stewart, the researcher who led the project: "We have a social need to be accepted, to be identified with a group. This is so true that the pressure from colleagues in their team is more effective than money in improving performance."
