Here's what recruiters look at during the 6 seconds they spend on your resume.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the job search is that candidates are rarely informed why their application wasn't selected for the position they wanted. Research by TheLadders (.pdf) reveals that a recruiter spends no more than 6 seconds on average looking at a candidate's resume before deciding if they are likely to go to the next stage of the recruitment process or not.

Researchers 'hired' 30 recruiters for 10 weeks to participate in the study, and they used "eye-tracking" technology; that is, they followed the movement of the eyes scanning the resume page to find out which areas interested recruiters during those six seconds of reading.

Their conclusions were summarized by Business Insider:

The most crucial areas of the resume are:

1. Your name.

2. Your current job title, and the company that employs you

3. The start date of your current job, and possibly the end date.

4. Your previous company and your previous job title.

5. The start and end dates of your previous job.

6. Your education
