Your memory is failing you! Learn how to learn!

Easily remembering the names of your interlocutors, quickly memorizing a speech, or recalling key figures without hesitation... all these little extras are real assets in professional life. Yet, despite all your efforts, it's impossible to remember everything you need to know!

Memory is an essential function of the human brain; it is used daily, so it is important to maintain and work on it. Even if the brain is not a muscle per se, intellectual work nevertheless maintains neuronal pathways. So if you find your memory is capricious, here are some easy-to-apply tips and techniques to tame it and gain efficiency.

Work your memory

It is quite possible to stimulate your brain functions through activities as simple as learning your appointments for the week, your shopping list, or the tasks you need to perform. You can thus encourage the formation of new connections and increase the storage of long-term information.

Structure information

Memory needs to be structured, organized, and classified, so if you have a lot of things to remember, it is imperative to learn to group all the data to better memorize it.
It would be futile to claim to remember a file submitted by your hierarchy by reading it in one go. Instead, take the time to gradually integrate the different elements, to digest them in order to be able to return to them in depth later…

Learn and then... sleep

A presentation read, copied, or spoken in the evening, just before going to bed, seems to memorize itself during sleep: in the morning, you remember it in detail or you learn it more easily than usual. So, even when you are tired and no longer have the strength to work, it may be wise to prepare the next day's learning in this way.

Repeat again and again

There is no secret; sports champions or the greatest magicians have in common, in addition to their obvious innate talent, the fact of having repeated thousands or even millions of times the same gesture. Repetition anchors facts in memory, so it is through practice that you will transfer the information stored in your memory.

Maintain physical health

A healthy diet leads to better results. Avoid consuming fast sugars (candies, cakes, white bread) and opt for slow sugars (wholemeal bread, pasta, rice, wholegrain cereals…), they are beneficial for memory! A poorly oxygenated body learns poorly: don't stay confined indoors all day! It's better to get some fresh air and exercise. The time you “lose” outside, you will regain in efficiency in your work. After an hour of concentration, remember to take a break: your attention will only be better when you resume!

Preserve your concentration

Short-term memory is easily distracted, which is why it is advisable to avoid or eliminate anything that could distract your attention, from the noise of the TV and that produced by children, as well as music considered too intrusive.
