What skills or personal qualities should you highlight (or develop!) to stand out in the job market?
1. Be a Good and True Team Player
“Being able to work in a team” is no longer enough: organizations are now looking for good team players, people who excel in a group. A good team player inspires confidence, communicates effectively with their peers, and prioritizes common goals instead of focusing on personal ambitions. Mentioning this in your resume is good; demonstrating it through involvement or key roles that required teamwork is even better.
2. Demonstrate Leadership
Knowing where you're going and leading others involved. This quality almost directly stems from the value of teamwork. It's therefore not surprising to see it become an asset sought after by organizations.
Almost all industries today must also cope with an increasingly fast-paced business environment: organizations want employees who are reactive and proactive, leaders.
3. Know How to Communicate Well in Writing
How many emails do you write daily? Add to that the reports to produce, the documents to share, etc. If each word comes out drop by drop, it becomes difficult to be efficient.
In these times where most exchanges are in writing, writing mistakes are major handicaps that impact the sender's credibility.
Finally, given the volume of emails received, they must be clear and concise, otherwise the message does not get across.
In short, if written language mastery is one of your strengths, shout it from the rooftops! But be careful, a poorly demonstrated strength strongly plays against a candidate's credibility (read: your resume should have impeccable language quality).
4. Mastery of Another Language
English, of course. English, always. Quebec companies are looking for bilingual candidates. Or rather, companies often reject non-bilingual candidates. Superior writing or oral communication skills in English are an undeniable asset in the Quebec job market. Mastering a language is worth much more than just getting by... or butchering it.
And other languages besides English? Of course! Knowledge of a third language, or even a fourth, will always be valued. Show off this asset, por favor!
5. A Motivated and Positive Attitude
We all agree that it is more pleasant to work with a motivated and positive person. It is therefore not surprising that recruiters lean towards these candidates. How do you highlight this asset? By letting it shine through. You can let it show in writing... and you can also pay attention to what you post on social networks to increase your likeability factor (nothing scientific, just common sense).
6. Loyalty
The new generations flit from job to job. However, companies value loyalty. A job held for several years demonstrates presumed loyalty, a quality that can outweigh a less substantial range of varied experiences. Don't be shy about it!
